ICE DAM (ROOF) –
An ice-dam on a roof happens when snow rest on the roof of a heated building, the snow melts and and runs down the roof, and then freezes at the eaves causing a build-up of ice. The ice-dam then block water from shedding off the roof causing and ice dam and allowing the water to buildup and back up under the roof covering (shingles, tiles, etc.)
Roofing systems in colder climates typically account for ice dams by installing an ice-and-water barrier along the eaves that extends from the eaves 24 inches past the inside of the inner-wall.
